The gates of Mugaba Palace have reopened, marking a significant moment in Uganda’s push to reposition cultural heritage at the centre of its tourism strategy. Perched on Kamukuzi Hill in Mbarara City, the restored palace is being touted as a new anchor for cultural tourism in the Ankole sub-region and beyond.
The reopening, officiated on March 28, 2026, follows years of renovation spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. Once home to the Omugabe of the Ankole Kingdom, Mugaba Palace had fallen into disrepair after the abolition of traditional kingdoms under the 1967 Republican Constitution introduced during the rule of Apollo Milton Obote.
Although cultural institutions were reinstated in 1993 under Yoweri Museveni, Ankole remains officially unrecognised, adding a layer of historical complexity to the palace’s revival.
Government officials say more than Shs7 billion has been invested in restoring the site, reflecting a broader ambition to diversify Uganda’s tourism offerings beyond its globally renowned wildlife attractions. The palace is expected to serve as both a historical landmark and a living cultural space, offering visitors insight into the traditions, identity and political history of the Banyankole people.
“This palace gives us a new product,” said Jackie Nyiracyiza, acting commissioner for antiquities and monuments, underscoring the government’s intention to expand tourism revenue through cultural storytelling. Authorities are targeting up to $50 million in earnings over the next 15 years by developing complementary tourism products, including agro-tourism experiences tied to Ankole’s iconic long-horned cattle.
Tourism planners view the reopening as a strategic move to reposition western Uganda as a holistic destination that blends nature, heritage and community-based experiences. Mugaba Palace is expected to complement existing attractions across the region, creating a more diverse itinerary for both domestic and international travellers.

Allan Karakore Buhanda, Mbarara City’s tourism officer, emphasised the palace’s central role in the history of the Omugabe and the broader Ankole identity. He noted that opening the site to the public creates an opportunity to both safeguard heritage and generate economic value for the community.
Stakeholders are particularly optimistic about experiential tourism offerings linked to the palace. Farm tours, cultural performances and interactive exhibitions are being explored as ways to attract travellers seeking authentic African experiences. These initiatives align with a growing global trend where tourists are increasingly drawn to immersive, story-driven journeys rather than conventional sightseeing.
