The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), with support from Greater Virunga, has completed the replacement of ladders on Mount Sabinyo, paving the way for the much-anticipated reopening of the hiking route. Known for its rugged beauty and unique peaks, Sabinyo offers trekkers an unforgettable adventure across some of Uganda’s most iconic volcanic mountains.
The trail features three distinct peaks, each connected by challenging passes that reward hikers with breathtaking landscape views. Standing at 3,669 meters, Mount Sabinyo straddles the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it one of the most extraordinary trekking destinations in the Virunga range.
According to UWA, the rehabilitation works are part of the IFPA-CD program, which aims to improve tourism infrastructure while conserving biodiversity. Once completed, the project will not only enhance Sabinyo’s trail but also link it with neighboring peaks—Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhabura. This connection will create a diversified trekking circuit, offering visitors more options for exploration and enriching the overall hiking experience.
The new ladders will greatly improve safety and accessibility on steep sections of the trail, particularly where the terrain requires climbers to scale sharp ridges. UWA says this development reflects their commitment to balancing visitor safety with the preservation of Uganda’s natural heritage.
With Sabinyo reopening, hikers can once again experience the thrill of climbing to the tri-border summit, where they can stand in Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC at the same time. Combined with the planned trail linkages to Gahinga and Muhabura, the region is set to become an even more attractive destination for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers.
The initiative is also expected to boost tourism in the Virunga massif, supporting local communities and promoting conservation efforts across the Greater Virunga Landscape.
