Uganda Airlines has officially confirmed its plans to launch direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick Airport, a strategic move expected to enhance trade, investment, and tourism between Uganda and the United Kingdom (UK). This development marks a significant milestone for the national carrier as it aims to expand its international reach and provide seamless connectivity between Uganda and one of its key trading partners.
Uganda’s exports to the UK primarily consist of coffee, bananas, and tea, with trade between the two nations amounting to $19.6 million (approximately UGX 70 billion) in 2023, according to international trade data. The introduction of direct flights between Entebbe and London Gatwick is anticipated to streamline cargo transport and facilitate smoother business transactions. By reducing transit times and eliminating the need for layovers, the new route is expected to benefit exporters, importers, and business travelers alike.
Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Bamuturaki recently confirmed the development, stating that the airline has secured landing rights at London Gatwick and is finalizing logistical arrangements before officially announcing the launch date.
“We are soon launching flights to London Gatwick. We have obtained the rights and are only working on the remaining paperwork,” Bamuturaki said, though she did not disclose specific details regarding the timeline or pricing.
Speculation about the launch intensified following a recent post on Uganda Airlines’ official X (formerly Twitter) account. The post hinted that the long-awaited route could commence as early as this summer.
“The wait is almost over. Entebbe-London Gatwick is coming soon,” read the tweet, sparking excitement among potential travelers, businesses, and members of the Ugandan diaspora in the UK.
This move fills a gap left by British Airways, which ceased operations on the Entebbe-London route in 2015 after more than six decades of service. Aviation industry sources have also indicated that Uganda Airlines has already listed London Gatwick in its booking system, suggesting that ticket sales could commence soon. The airline’s decision to reintroduce direct flights to the UK is expected to benefit both leisure and business travelers, reducing travel time and offering a more convenient connection for Ugandans and international visitors.

Beyond London, Uganda Airlines has ambitious expansion plans, with new routes to Accra in Ghana and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia also in the pipeline. Currently, Uganda Airlines operates 20 daily flights across 16 routes and has recently expanded its network to include Abuja, Harare, and Lusaka.

According to a recent report from the Auditor General, Uganda Airlines’ losses decreased from UGX 266 billion the previous year to UGX 248 billion, indicating progress in its efforts to achieve profitability. Industry analysts believe that adding a high-demand route such as London will contribute significantly to the airline’s revenue stream and financial recovery.
Shakila Rahim Lamar, the airline’s head of corporate affairs, emphasized the economic benefits of the new route, noting that it would unlock Uganda’s trade potential and significantly enhance export capabilities.
“We are unlocking Uganda’s trade potential, and this route will enhance our export capabilities,” Lamar stated, highlighting that Uganda Airlines has experienced a remarkable 280% cargo growth in recent years.
Entebbe International Airport has also undergone significant transformations, now serving 35 international destinations compared to just nine before Uganda Airlines resumed operations. With increasing direct flights to major global hubs, Uganda is strengthening its position as a competitive player in both regional and international aviation.
